The concept of Swadeshi is more than 150 years old. It was a guiding force for the Indian independence struggle under the visionary leadership of Lokmanya Tilak, Veer Savarkar, Sri Aurobindo, and Mahatma Gandhi. Even decades after independence from British colonialism, it was felt that adopting Swadeshi as a way of life is essential for achieving complete economic independence. In the 1980s, various socio-political organizations launched a comprehensive campaign for Swadeshi. This movement helped spread awareness in society about Swadeshi and its importance in our lifestyle. To give a concrete shape to this movement, the decision was taken to establish the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM). Accordingly, the SJM came into existence on November 22, 1991, in Nagpur.
